The Great Gatsby has the fashion world in a ‘20s tizzy, but this flapper fringe is not the look. Even in the famous era of excess, I can bet Fitzgerald himself would tell Charlotte Olympia to tone it down. As if covering the entire wedge in bright pink strands wasn’t enough, there’s a pompom on top. When you strut in sky-high shoes, you want to inspire awe, not fits of laughter. For a great pair of Olympia wedges, check out the black and gold Carmens (on Matches for $889) Tina and I bought. Leave Gigi for the Moulin Rouge. Available at Bergdorf Goodman for $1,085.

These Prada pumps are the most versatile shoes I’ve bought all year. Without being basic or boring, the black and white style coordinates with essentially everything in my wardrobe from fitted Victoria Beckham sheaths to colorful slacks. The classic cap toe adds a polished touch of old world elegance. If you’re looking for something a little vampier, trade the cap toe in for slim black straps on the brand’s equally covetable criss cross pumps (at Neiman Marcus for $690). Spring’s monochrome madness might be a trend, but the fact of the matter is that black and white never goes out of style. Available at Bergdorf Goodman for $750.

Not everyone at the MET Gala dressed for the punk theme. Those who did, did it well, though. While Michelle Dockery slipped out of her leather jacket before hitting the carpet, her Fall 2013 Gianvito Rossis ensured that she kept her cool. The Lady of Downton Abbey went wild with black python Edgiles (to be available at Gianvito Rossi). I love the blue pair, but on a punk rock night, I can see why she went dark. See what the other celebs wore…

Rooney Mara accessorized her gorgeous lacy Givenchy gown with the house’s white shark tooth sandals. Available on Farfetch in black for $850.

It’s no surprise that Jennifer Lawrence arrived to the Gala in Dior (although I don’t know if I would call the look punk), but these Brian Atwood Shina platform sandals were a great surprise. She coordinated her gown’s sequined florals with the shoe’s flowery appliqués. Unfortunately, Atwoods are never comfortable. As pretty as they are, I won’t be picking these up for myself. Available at Brian Atwood for $2,495.

Jennifer’s Hunger Games costar Elizabeth Banks came to play in a bold gold Atelier Versace chainmail jacket. Her daring leather fringed shoes? Oh, just some custom Brian Atwood “Elizabeth” sandals. It looks like the odds really are ever in her favor.

I couldn’t leave out SJP. Between her Philip Treacy mohawk headdress and these custom Christian Louboutin Monica boots, she definitely took the event’s theme to heart. She made sure to flash the red velvet tartan boots (and her knickers!) all night long.

I just posted on some stilt-like wedges and now I’m come across yet another impossibly high pair of shoes (we’re talking more than six inches). Designers have far more faith in our strutting abilities than they should. Don’t get me wrong – I love a gorgeous platform. Stepping into an extra few inches up feels like floating in the clouds. But this is far from the norm. Versace layers a classic black shoe atop a set of monochrome platforms. Between the shoe and the heel is an empty space that you can see through, producing an interesting effect that just highlights again what a tightrope act this heel really is. If that isn’t enough to have you running for the hills, then check out the pink version – with the patent leather it looks like a plastic Barbie pump. What do you think – Snob or Slob? Available in black or pink on Luisa via Roma for $1,086.

These Casadei wedges are the tallest shoes I’ve seen in a while at nearly 6.5 inches (160MM to be exact!). Doesn’t that kind of height put them under the category of stilts?? The wedge itself is an intriguing mix of woods ranging from pale to cherry that’s topped with a tonal leather sandal. Chic, right? While walking in tall shoes is something I’ve mastered, I’m no circus performer. The pitch doesn’t even look forgiving. Aesthetically, I like these – it’s just that in practice, a terrible tragedy seems inevitable. Falling on your face is never cute. Save these for the Cirque du Soleil performers. Available on Luisa via Roma for $995.

These KTZ shoes perfectly exemplify how even the most creative ideas can end up crashing and burning. Kudos for originality – there are not many intricate wedge sneakers out there, but as you can see, there’s a reason for that. The functional nature of running shoes makes the ornamentation of these wooden wedges look incredibly out of place. Where would you wear these? And what with? I’m much more likely to go for the sandal version ($750), yet that was also poorly executed. Since the focus is on elaborate details, the design of the actual leather sandals on top should be tighter and more precise. The same goes for the sneakers. They look like orthopedic shoes were dropped on top of fancy rollerblades, except they don’t roll – at least not with me! Pre-order on Luisa via Roma in black or white for $948.

This style is a little confusing to me. The awkward mix of masculine and feminine seems incongruous, but I guess that’s the appeal. I would stick with ladylike pairings to add a sense of delicacy to these chunky heels. While they’re seen most often in the office, try to have fun with them when you’re off the clock. If you decide to jump in feet first into this trend, here are my top picks to keep you ahead of the curve.

Bottega Veneta Leather Platform Pumps: With these hefty platforms, you’ll grow another six inches in seconds.
Chiara and I snatched up the same pair of metallic Charlotte Olympia Carmen wedges earlier this week in Dallas. We were twins for the day (we would have been triplets if they were available in Tina’s size – she promptly ordered them). Normally matching your GFs is a faux pas, but these are so worth it. Besides, Chiara lives 7,000 miles away in Milan! It would be cruel to kept comfortable, versatile shoes like these to myself. Don’t get me wrong – I won’t be wearing them to walk around Disneyland anytime soon, but considering the whopping 6.5 inches, they’re completely wearable. The pitch is gradual and the enormous platform makes it pretty flat. With this kind of height, an ankle strap is a must (either that or crutches will soon be!), and Olympia has that covered. She also perfectly balances the high shine of the knockout gold wedge with rich black suede, making these quiet enough to coordinate with most outfits but loud enough to help set off fireworks with an LBD! On Matches for $889.

Coachella may be over, but the photos of festival-going celebs will live on forever. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is up to you! Vote for your favorite in the poll at the end of the post. One thing is certain – the stars went dressed down, which is exactly what you should do for a day in the desert. Walking around in a crowded meadow in stilettos? That’s the ticket to a day of hell, and considering what you had to pay to attend Coachella, you want it to be the time of your life. Alessandra Ambrosio went in Isabel Marant’s studded Caleen boots (at Barneys New York for $890). The cowboy-inspired style is perfect for taking a beating while still looking good, so high marks to the model! Check out some other looks after the jump.

Katy Perry’s Dolce & Gabbana outfit and vintage Lulu Guinness bag are pretty outlandish, but then again, this is the same California Gurl who wore a bra that shot whipped cream – short of Lady Gaga, anything goes for this pop star. She at least knew to go easy with the shoes, so these white wedges were just right.

Kristen Stewart has been known to wear Converse (on Zappos for $55) with ball gowns, so does this really surprise anyone?

Ouch. I appreciate that Vanessa Hudgens is trying to get in the hippie festival mood, but the ‘60s are over. The mix of the crazy curly hair, a rosette headband, and a barely there white playsuit are just too much. One thing that is right? Those brown gladiator sandals.

Rita Ora is the face of Superga this spring, so it makes sense to see her repping the brand. Honestly, I’d wear Supergas (on Shopbop for $65) to Coachella even if they weren’t paying me! They’re classic comfort.

The Isabella pumps are 5 1⁄2 inches tall with an inch and a half platform giving you a considerable boost in the height department. The three adjustable straps give these MaryJane’s a sexy edge and amp up the va-va-voom feel of these Vixen’s by Viv. These are perfect for those days where you just can’t wear your run-of-the-mill nude or black pumps… like when you know there’s a tall, dark and handsome man expected in your meeting that day- or when you’re just feeling the need for an extra few inches. Whatever the case may be, pick these up at Zappo’s for $325 and get strutting.

Brian Atwood is always doing well for himself, but lately it seems that everyday I see someone rocking his stratospheric platforms. In NYC yesterday, Oscar PR Girl strutted into our lunch wearing Atwoods, and now actress Teresa Palmer has followed suit. While it’s no secret that Brian makes the sexiest shoes on the market, these bejeweled beauties are on another level – literally! Teresa’s black Clizias are double platforms (a personal favorite) with the top covered in lush suede and the bottom in sleek leather. Its graduated gold disks pop on the t-strap like jewels for your feet. The style also comes in fuchsia and colorblocked purple, but when you already have such strong embellishments, color almost seems excessive. Available at Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,200.

Sometimes it can be good to pack on the LBS – the little black shoes, that is! You’d think it’d be easy to find chic black heels, but the ones I’ve seen lately have all been either too secretarial or too streetwalker. I’ve longed for a pointed-toe pump, but refused any single soles, as they’re unbearably painful above three inches. So like Goldilocks, I’ve been going from store to store finding that nothing was quite right. Thank god I finally found these! Leave it to Saint Laurent to take the Mary Jane from sweet to sexy. With a stick-straight stiletto and sizable platform, these pumps will leave your legs looking slender but powerful. They go with everything and thanks to the sweet ankle straps, you’ll be able to maneuver around with ease. I would say wear them with tights, but now that the weather’s finally warming up, it’s time to show off your gams! Available at Saks Fifth Avenue in 3″ heels ($795) and 5″ patent heels ($845).

The neutrality of nude pumps makes them essentials, but in springtime, a little dose of color is also an essential. So pick up some peachy pumps that will give you a slice of citrusy orange color without overdosing you on sweetness. When you feel like reaching for those go-to tan heels, pick the peaches instead. Use them in an understated peaches and cream combo, or for a more daring outfit, pair them with brights like turquoise earrings and a yummy yellow mini!

In a season full of flowers and pastels, our inner glamour girls are feeling a little ignored. Old Hollywood-style platforms are the quickest ways to cheer them up! So let’s put our Snob sensibilities to the test. Which of these black and gold shoes do you think is frugal and which is top of the line? Any guesses? Okay, here’s the moment of truth – the second pair is frugal! The Art Deco-inspired Boutique 9 sandal (at Bloomingdale’s for $160) is perfect for a special dinner date or even an evening of swing dancing. But if spring shopping hasn’t done your credit card in, go for broke with Jimmy Choo’s dazzling gold elaphe and black suede sparklers (on NET-A-PORTER for $1,495). While the Choos are certainly a cut above when it comes to the shimmering snakeskin, each shoe has special features to enjoy (check out the cutouts on the back of the Boutique 9s – to die for!).
