Miu Miu’s black and white pumps are the perfect graphic shoes for toned-down Snobs who want to be trendy without investing in heels that will go out of style as soon as the season ends. They’re great for when you feel like dressing colorfully and need unfussy shoes to ground a vibrant look. The style is a minimalist play on wingtip brogues, adapting the design to some seriously sizable platforms. These pointed beauties guarantee height and an elongated silhouette (don’t let the photo fool you – the shoes are sleek, not stumpy). Even if you haven’t been hitting the gym, they’ll give you sculpted calves so that no one will be the wiser. Best of all, the double-stacked platforms mean that even though you’re towering over the masses, these are really just like three-inch heels! Available at Saks Fifth Avenue for $675.

These Prada pumps are the most versatile shoes I’ve bought all year. Without being basic or boring, the black and white style coordinates with essentially everything in my wardrobe from fitted Victoria Beckham sheaths to colorful slacks. The classic cap toe adds a polished touch of old world elegance. If you’re looking for something a little vampier, trade the cap toe in for slim black straps on the brand’s equally covetable criss cross pumps (at Neiman Marcus for $690). Spring’s monochrome madness might be a trend, but the fact of the matter is that black and white never goes out of style. Available at Bergdorf Goodman for $750.

Pair with: Jason Wu’s bright eel Karlie box clutch (at Jason Wu for $1,630) will add a few stripes of color to your outfit while still playing with the shoe’s bi-color combination.

It’s a little early to be giving out any fashion awards just yet, but in the first day alone, we’ve already seen a legion of exceptional contenders. Not surprisingly, The Great Gatsby ladies are leading the pack. Isla Fisher’s angelic white Dolce & Gabbana dress is a far cry from her character’s vampy wardrobe. The simple elegance of it was sweetly pulled together with Roger Vivier’s open toe pumps. Who needs tons of color when you have a gorgeous red mane and pucker to match?

This is not the first time we’ve spotted Carey Mulligan in her Saint Laurent t-strap pumps (on NET-A-PORTER for $825). It’s clear why our Daisy loves her heels – at 5 inches, she gets serious height and with the sleek straps it’ll be easier to stay on her feet.

Nicole Kidman was just named the new face of Jimmy Choo, so like any good spokeswoman, she arrived on the red carpet in a pair of the label’s hottest heels. The coral patent pumps were just the shock of electricity needed to bring out the vibrant florals on her Dior gown. Shop Jimmy Choo on NET-A-PORTER.

Pretty pixie Audrey Tautou coordinated her sweet Red Valentino sundress with nude patent pumps. Minimal makeup and jewelry made the festival’s mistress of ceremonies the picture of simple French sophistication.

Jimmy Choo’s sleek, pointed-toe pumps get down and dirty with not just degradé color but with a transfixing transition of shiny leather to suede. The whole design is brilliant from metallic top to bottom. And it isn’t just a visual delight – placing the soft suede up front gives you the comfort you need to stay on your feet. So the only question is which will it be – the black or the tan? Silver shimmer fades to black on the 5-inch Anouk pumps creating a clash of color that’s perfect for nighttime fun, while the more casual 4-inch Abels are an exciting update on the must-have nude pump. The way the golden tan fades smoothly into sandy suede will excite but never overwhelm, making it the perfect replacement for those feeling disenchanted with the basic. Available on NET-A-PORTER in black ($750) and nude ($695).

Not everyone is daring enough to wear cheetah-print on a dress or coat, but you don’t need to cover much real estate to answer the call of the wild. I love wearing animal-inspired shoes because even though they’re fun, the colors are neutral – you can coordinate them with all sorts of wild patterns and bright hues. The tame don’t survive in the jungle and that philosophy applies to fashion, as well. Go crazy with your style – heaps of gold, a vampy dress, etc. Jimmy Choo follows the animal instinct on the Lumina pumps with sumptuous calf hair that just begs to be touched, and punctuates its print with cap-toes and patent heels (all trimmed in mirrored metallic leather for good measure). In shoes this striking, you’ll be able to take down any and all prey that crosses your path. Available at Bergdorf Goodman for $950.

Sarah Jessica Parker may have made a big splash at the MET Gala, but the famous fashionista knows how to tone it down just as well as she knows how to play it up. In spite of her doctor’s warning against heels, it seems SJP just can’t part with her pumps. Who can blame her when these are the shoes in question? Sarah paired her purple vintage dress with Roger Vivier’s pastel ombre “Killing Me Softly” heels. Forget painting as you know it – shoes are the perfect canvas for watercolor, and Vivier is the master artist. These on-trend pointed pumps come from his Rendez-vous Collection, and would I ever like to rendezvous with them! Whether you’re going to a big red carpet event like Sarah or to an intimate summer gathering with friends, these pumps will be the perfect date. Price upon request at Roger Vivier.

Not everyone at the MET Gala dressed for the punk theme. Those who did, did it well, though. While Michelle Dockery slipped out of her leather jacket before hitting the carpet, her Fall 2013 Gianvito Rossis ensured that she kept her cool. The Lady of Downton Abbey went wild with black python Edgiles (to be available at Gianvito Rossi). I love the blue pair, but on a punk rock night, I can see why she went dark. See what the other celebs wore…

Rooney Mara accessorized her gorgeous lacy Givenchy gown with the house’s white shark tooth sandals. Available on Farfetch in black for $850.

It’s no surprise that Jennifer Lawrence arrived to the Gala in Dior (although I don’t know if I would call the look punk), but these Brian Atwood Shina platform sandals were a great surprise. She coordinated her gown’s sequined florals with the shoe’s flowery appliqués. Unfortunately, Atwoods are never comfortable. As pretty as they are, I won’t be picking these up for myself. Available at Brian Atwood for $2,495.

Jennifer’s Hunger Games costar Elizabeth Banks came to play in a bold gold Atelier Versace chainmail jacket. Her daring leather fringed shoes? Oh, just some custom Brian Atwood “Elizabeth” sandals. It looks like the odds really are ever in her favor.

I couldn’t leave out SJP. Between her Philip Treacy mohawk headdress and these custom Christian Louboutin Monica boots, she definitely took the event’s theme to heart. She made sure to flash the red velvet tartan boots (and her knickers!) all night long.

I just posted on some stilt-like wedges and now I’m come across yet another impossibly high pair of shoes (we’re talking more than six inches). Designers have far more faith in our strutting abilities than they should. Don’t get me wrong – I love a gorgeous platform. Stepping into an extra few inches up feels like floating in the clouds. But this is far from the norm. Versace layers a classic black shoe atop a set of monochrome platforms. Between the shoe and the heel is an empty space that you can see through, producing an interesting effect that just highlights again what a tightrope act this heel really is. If that isn’t enough to have you running for the hills, then check out the pink version – with the patent leather it looks like a plastic Barbie pump. What do you think – Snob or Slob? Available in black or pink on Luisa via Roma for $1,086.

Shoes? Snob. Outfit? Definite slob. This is exactly how even the chicest of accessories can fall prey to a tragic outfit. Lately Miley Cyrus’ wardrobe seems to consist of sky-high shorts and equally high heels, which just doesn’t work when they’re running shorts. These Saint Laurent Paloma sandals deserve so much more than a sideways red cap and a “Sex Drugs & Rap” emblazoned t-shirt! The seductively striped combo of black suede and silver lame calls for a gorgeous gown or at least a more sophisticated pair of shorts. I can’t even look at this photo for more than a few seconds at a time. I know “she’s just being Miley,” but everyone can use the help of a stylist now and again. We get it – you’re not a Disney princess anymore. There’s no need to throw away good taste with your tiara. Available at Barneys New York for $995.

Who said women couldn’t wear bow ties?? Certainly not Gianvito Rossi. With Sergio for a father, you could basically say that the man was born to design shoes, and these are some of his best yet. He started working at the side of his famous dad at age 17 and has never slowed down. With these new sandals, Gianvito takes the delicate ankle strap to even daintier heights with a crisp black bow. Women love bows – in our hair, on our clothes, and tied around our ankles. They’re whimsical, girly touches, but he ensures that they’re also sophisticated and mature. The white leather and black satin complement each other perfectly with the back of the shoe arching intriguingly above the fray. Pants would suffocate this style – save these for your pretty summer dresses! Available exclusively at Barneys New York for $775.

This style is a little confusing to me. The awkward mix of masculine and feminine seems incongruous, but I guess that’s the appeal. I would stick with ladylike pairings to add a sense of delicacy to these chunky heels. While they’re seen most often in the office, try to have fun with them when you’re off the clock. If you decide to jump in feet first into this trend, here are my top picks to keep you ahead of the curve.

Bottega Veneta Leather Platform Pumps: With these hefty platforms, you’ll grow another six inches in seconds. Wear with a pencil skirt for a cheeky play on secretarial style. On NET-A-PORTER for $950.

On NET-A-PORTER for $1,795.

Gucci Straw and Studded Leather Loafer Pumps: Gucci should’ve just stuck with the horsebit hardware rather than overwhelming the already unusual style with a barrage of silver studs.
I’d been looking for a pair of killer heels to wear with my cropped jeans this summer, and what better for the job than these perfectly poisonous scales? The price is shockingly reasonable, so I’m excited to finally slip my feet into my first pair of Tom Ford’s covetable shoes! Their first rule of business will be AG Adriano Goldschmied’s cigarette skinnies (on Shopbop for $210). The jeans have rolled up cuffs that are just begging for some action! But even more exciting is this faded denim pair from Levi’s (at Levi’s for $118). The hue and high rise have me longing for the ‘90s when this style wasn’t just a trend but the norm. The pants have a little stretch in them, so they’re really comfortable and flattering (no muffin top here!). Plus, the biker quilting adds an edge that you don’t normally get from comfy clothes. I made it a Levi’s shopping spree by snatching up their white denim jacket (at Levi’s for $118), too. Basically, all of my summer staples are covered! Available at Bergdorf Goodman for $890.

We’ve been hearing a lot about how 3D printing is the way of the future, with Dita von Teese’s printed dress a recent example. The technology can easily create prototypes, so naturally, innovators like shoe designer Marla Marchant are using it to bring their ideas on paper to life! For her master’s project (oh yeah, did I mention? Marla did this as a student at the London College of Fashion!), she wanted to bring back the art of craftsmanship by designing intricately woven heels. Reminiscent of bridges and baskets, the imaginative styles are meant to make the female body appear weightless, as if it needs to be tied down like a balloon. Ssense interviewed the designer on her project, which was inspired by architects like Gaudi and Calatrava. I’m not sure you can wear these (11 inches would be a lot to teeter around in anyway!), but if you’re interested in inquiring about her art, e-mail Marla here.

Brian Atwood is always doing well for himself, but lately it seems that everyday I see someone rocking his stratospheric platforms. In NYC yesterday, Oscar PR Girl strutted into our lunch wearing Atwoods, and now actress Teresa Palmer has followed suit. While it’s no secret that Brian makes the sexiest shoes on the market, these bejeweled beauties are on another level – literally! Teresa’s black Clizias are double platforms (a personal favorite) with the top covered in lush suede and the bottom in sleek leather. Its graduated gold disks pop on the t-strap like jewels for your feet. The style also comes in fuchsia and colorblocked purple, but when you already have such strong embellishments, color almost seems excessive. Available at Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,200.
