Not your average summer sandal, to say the least. The very least…Okay, come on, these are so sick, it’s making me crazy! The reason we love Alexander Wang? We’re looking at it right here. If you’re over gladiator sandals (and aren’t we all?) but still have a yen for a highly dramatic sandal that will ignite stares and conversation alike, search no further.

The only problem is, you kinda need to have calves that are just the right proportions, or else they won’t quite work. Too short and they’ll hit you mid-knee; too thick, they’ll cut in awkwardly; or too thin and the straps might buckle and flop. I don’t care. I’m getting them anyway. A pair of cage sandals this special doesn’t come along every day, and the design is just minimal enough, with sparsely placed straps, that you’re not going to just want to wear them once and be done. There is something to be said for how much I adored my chunky platform Mary Janes…

1. Dolce & Gabbana Leather and Mesh Biker Boots: Forget old-fashioned Frye. Take your biker boot with a splash of sex appeal. See-through mesh puts a new spin on the mannish look so you won’t be too retro.

2. Chloé Multi-Strap Mary Jane Pump: Just enough chunk, a girlish round toe, and straps to spare turn a demure concept into a dangerous-looking shoe.

3. Alexander Wang Andrea Boot: Go grunge and you’ve got to have some Wang in the mix. Think combat boot redux with these sexy, slitted, laced-up flats. Offbeat grommets bring extra edge.

4. Marc by Marc Jacobs Brown Wertmuller Wedges: Paying faint homage to the Mary Jane with chunk to spare, these will fit in with beaten-up Levi’s and schoolgirl kilts alike. Wooly socks not included.

5. Dr. Martens Floral-Print Leather Lace-Up Boots: And then there are the boots that started it all! In cheeky, girly floral this lighter take brings a sense of humor to a heavy look.

There’s no doubt about it: Alexander Wang is maturing and nothing tells the story of his unstoppable growth like his shoes. For spring, the grungy downtown tomboy has evolved into the savvy, pavement-pounding lady – she’s still a bad girl, but it’s disguised beneath a veneer of polish.

These sandals and pumps are stark and sleek, architectural and modern. Yes, the design revolves around the clean, vented straps, but it’s just as much about the negative space that has been created. No matter what your style (whether refined badass or lady, through and through), you’ll find multiple occasions for the adaptable Nadia sandal ($525), from laidback afternoons to dinners out. On the other hand, the parchment-pale Joan mule ($545) requires precious steps to keep the white white-white. You can’t veer from the path with this crisp number – one streak of dirt will just look sad – which is reason enough for me to nix it and stick with Alex’s not-so-basic black.
