This style is a little confusing to me. The awkward mix of masculine and feminine seems incongruous, but I guess that’s the appeal. I would stick with ladylike pairings to add a sense of delicacy to these chunky heels. While they’re seen most often in the office, try to have fun with them when you’re off the clock. If you decide to jump in feet first into this trend, here are my top picks to keep you ahead of the curve.

Bottega Veneta Leather Platform Pumps: With these hefty platforms, you’ll grow another six inches in seconds. Wear with a pencil skirt for a cheeky play on secretarial style. On NET-A-PORTER for $950.

On NET-A-PORTER for $1,795.

Gucci Straw and Studded Leather Loafer Pumps: Gucci should’ve just stuck with the horsebit hardware rather than overwhelming the already unusual style with a barrage of silver studs.
Salma Hayek wore some sexy Alexander McQueen Skull pumps to the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards on February 23. These black-suede, bad-ass pumps have gold-tone studding and skull with cut-glass detailing and a sky-high heel to send you into the rafters. These are obviously statement shoes, so wear them with a short LBD and some statement jewelry to really make them pop. Or go Selma’s route and pair them with a feminine, sweet dress to counter-act the edge. Personally, I would end up looking like a confused pirate if I tried to pull these off, but if you’re like Selma and can rock skulls with a straight face, pick these up at FarFetch for $892.

Each season, I choose one shoe that will set the tone of my wardrobe for the next few months. For SS13, it’s McQueen’s black perspex square pump. Dipping the plexi heel in metallic makes it look as if it’s liquid gold in glass. The delicious and nutritious way to start off a morning of world domination! They’re much classier than the heel you usually associate with perspex. It manages this feat with rich black suede, a subtle loafer style, and a gold cap-toe. Sublime – I’ll wear these with everything! Plus, it combines the pointy toe trend (without having a killer tip) with the crowd-pleasing platform. A win win! Available at Alexander McQueen for $1,795.

Pair with: Like, I said I plan on sporting these with most everything in my closet. But to start off, let’s go for Rodarte’s perforated bow bracelet (on Yoox for $250). A chunky metallic heel like McQueen’s calls for a chunky gold accessory.

The snakes in the grass this spring will be your shoes! These sculpted McQ Alexander McQueen wooden wedges are decked out in black and white reptilian print for some height with bite. Snakes come out to play when the weather warms up, so warm up your color palette with a bright spring outfit. They can be tough to coordinate well (there is such a thing as too much of a good thing!), but luckily a natural snake goes with everything. Pair the curved wedges with Christopher Kane’s princess mini skirt (at Opening Ceremony for $1,185). The design is like a painter’s tray – tons of different colors to mix on this ladylike silk silhouette. Since the skirt is so loud (in the best way possible), make the shirt and bag simple. Rochas lace-trimmed silk top (on Net-a-Porter for $805) is nice and girly with a Peter Pan collar and just a few lean strips of lace. For the bag, Jil Sander’s geometric crossbody (pre-order on Forzieri for $880) will play well into the grays of the shoe and dress. But for the jewel, really challenge yourself with another multicolored piece like these Tom Binns Swarovksi earrings (on Net-a-Porter for $345). Every once in while it’s fun to give Rainbow Brite a run for her money! Available on Yoox for $335.

Black ballet flats are necessary basics. I love carrying around a pair in my car for quick changes. But the nature of basics means that they can be, you know – basic. These edgy updates have unusual dimensions and sometimes outright morbid embellishments (thank you, McQueen!) that’ll make them the prima ballerinas of your outfit – the kind Natalie Portman would wear on a dark day. So will you dance the Black Swan?

Chloe 10MM Leather and Satin Ballerina Flats: No, these aren’t regulation ballet shoes, but with the satin straps, they do look like it! The flats are available in classic pale pink, but that won’t match as much as the black – just another reason to go dark. On Luisa via Roma for $501.

Christian Louboutin Pigalle Spikes Patent-Leather Ballet Flats: The spikes on these patent Pigalles couldn’t do any real damage, but they’re definitely a good intimidation tactic. On Net-a-Porter for $995.

Simple enough to wear with mostly anything, but not a bit boring! At Barneys New York for $740.

Alexander McQueen Skull-Embellished Watersnake Ballet Flats: These classic black flats are crowned with McQueen’s signature skull for a knockout punch of attitude. On Net-a-Porter for $795.

Yellow traffic lights may warn you to slow down, but the hot hue has me hitting the gas at full speed! The yellow trend is going strong for spring and has me craving even bright, fuller tints.
When I think of stereotypical “sexy” boots, it’s hard not to picture Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, her black patent-leather boots reaching all the way up to her thighs. While Vivian got a 180º makeover, she would have been better off updating her hooker heels for a pair of these genuinely sexy boots. As in, sexy in a not-so demure way. These are “don’t F with me” boots for the diva in you, and we all have her somewhere, even if you don’t always let her show.

1. Damir Doma Black Metal Bar Wedge Boots: If you thought a wedge couldn’t be seductive, check out the badass metal bar curved around the front of these ankle boots. On Ssense for $1,275.

These sandals are completely, certifiably insane. So how can you not love them? I, for one, am head over heels for Alexander McQueen’s latest heel-less wonders. It’s all about the overall effect, but one detail is more awe-striking than the next. And yes, awe-striking also means totally impractical. First of all, the fully bloomed appliqué flowers are made of real enamel, so they are hard and heavy. Add decadent tulle backing to these roses, plus palette accents, and it’s a gorgeous garden party.

Plucked right off the runway, these are the shoes you never imagined would make it to retail – which makes them that much more special. Sure, they are meant to be displayed in a museum case, but there’s nothing wrong with wearing them a couple of times. For very short periods of time. With that lack of heel (that still has you standing 6.5” taller), the extended platform, complete with metal horseshoe accent, is all you have to stand on. This style has been done to death by Zanotti and the like, so you might have no problem adjusting.
Maybe it’s the eternal kid in me who associates September with “back-to-school” time, but it happens without fail. Whether you were subjected to a uniform of pleated skirts or not, fall and plaid will always go hand in hand. But instead of going all Catholic schoolgirl, trade in the typical prep-school vibe for a shoe that gives plaid a whole new connotation: Edgy! Strong! Sexy! These picks run the gamut, but all steer clear of conservative.

1. Christian Louboutin Intern Spiked Cap-Toe Plaid Loafer: The logo crest is pure camp on this slipper. How can you tell? A spiked-out cap-toe, of course.
At Bergdorf Goodman for $895.

2. McQ Alexander McQueen Patent Plaid Creepers: Take your plaid with a side of punk, and wear this dark tartan with a pair of slinky, cropped skinnies.
On Shopbop for $530.

3. Marni Plaid Flannel-Covered Leather Loafers: The most traditional of the bunch, these will be best worn with an itty-bitty miniskirt or a short leather sheath-dress.
On Net-a-Porter for $610.

4. Marni Calf and Tartan Lace-Up Shoes: Marni shoes they can also do plaid with a sense of humor. Grunge-inspired oxfords ought to be styled with a light degree of dishevelment.
On Luisa via Roma for $630.

Ominous skulls and curvy hearts might sound like doodles out of two opposing high-school girls’ notebooks (one goth and one cheerleader, to be really stereotypical), but only Alexander McQueen has the witty touch to make both feel genuinely badass and inherently chic. No skulls to be found here, but these are not your average goody-two-shoes hearts.

It’s the season of the pumped-up ankle boot, and shoes like these will have you inspired to flirt with your toes. Studded leather is nothing new, but this updated take on the cap-toe (with the gold-stud heart dashed off just before the point, for a look that’s unique) feels thoroughly mint. Especially with a curved heel and bent silhouette, which announces you may have love to give, but you don’t offer it to just anyone. At Bergdorf Goodman for $1,885.

Pair with: Induct a little rockstud bling to your studded-bootie hall of fame. The gold-tone base of this Valentino bracelet makes for a perfect metal match. On My Theresa for $818.

Crimson, oxblood, primary, and bordeaux: the color ranges from the subtle to the sensational, but Fall 2012’s best booties are all sexy and vampy. Red ankle boots are so good with all the black clothes we expect to see next season, so let the rest of your outfit remain neutral (or if you’re more daring, contrast and clash) and let your shoes make the statement.

1. Yves Saint Laurent Oxblood Leather Amarena Wedge Boots: In black, they are tough-girl chic. In oxblood, they are simply to die for. Wear these with everything from inky jeans to dresses of opposing hues, like cobalt or white.
On Ssense for $1,245.

2. Giuseppe Zanotti Peep-Toe Shoe Boot: Fierce and bright, sometimes you need to get straight to the point: a burst of red-hot suede that’s made to get noticed.
On Farfetch for $736.

3. Miu Miu Suede Bow Peep-Toe Bootie: This deep shade is the most whimsical by far. I would juxtapose these sweet, curvaceous booties with a pair of black leather leggings.
At Bergdorf Goodman for $790.

4. Alexander McQueen Oxblood Leather Buckle Booties: Bondage and equestrian themes meld seamlessly on these improperly British booties, packed with mesmerizing details.
On Ssense for $1,360.

5. Marc by Marc Jacobs Maroon Chelsea Booties: Keep it easy and casual, trading your black Chelseas for a pair with loads more personality. This heel is just enough to give some height, without putting you on an incline.
On Ssense for $450.
