As far as I’m concerned, Nicholas Kirkwood can get away with pretty much everything. Even putting a kooky, painting-inspired face on a loafer – when if it was done by anyone else (aside from, perhaps, Charlotte Olympia), it would look like a college art-class disaster. But would I wear these shoes, inspired by the creative surrealist and all-around renaissance man Jean Cocteau (although this jagged portrait of Orpheus, out of his 1950 film, looks more like a Picasso to me)? You’re not likely to see me scuttling around with this funny face on my feet.
I love it when fashion and art collide – and they often do – but if I’m going for out there, it’s going to be in the vein of sky-high heel of surreal proportions, not designed after a surrealist flick. But props to the cool gamine who traipses in these, especially if she does it wearing a cropped skinny trouser and with an air of mystery. On Net-a-Porter for $925.
