It seems as snow-haired Karl gets older, the spirit of the Chanel girl gets younger and younger. For Resort 2013, he takes it to a new level, clearly with a hip-hop-meets-Versailles vision (a hybrid of M.I.A. and Marie Antoinette?). The models were painted up in cotton-candy hues like reveling ballerinas at a Rococo party (a mix of French-army structure and decadent boned lace and taffeta), but it was the shoes that really set the tone.
The vibe is so fresh and trendy, they are barely even recognizable as Chanel! Brogue sneakers, in metallic gold, pink, and lavender, with chunky, flat white platforms took center stage, with an array of paneled, peek-a-boo sandals accompanying the kicks. PVC is proving to be a huge trend for resort shoes, but it’s not the most practical (sticky feet, anyone?). Flashes of sexy transparency aside, Chanel is definitely in a comfy-casual mood for their ingénue this season. She might love her skirts cascading and her lace ornate, but she also wants to jump, stomp, and dance. Karl couldn’t have said it better himself: “Frivolity is a healthy attitude.”
