Joie de vivre. Where would the fashion world be without it? And a question just as mind-boggling, where would shoe snobs be without Christian Louboutin? If most designers have a lust for life, he utterly emanates it. This passion for all things fun, irreverent, and spirit-driven could not be clearer than it is in his latest collection.

Now I love sequins and spikes as much as the next girl, but there comes a time in a snob’s life when you must ask yourself: do I need another pair of studded, bejeweled platforms? For some, the answer would be a quick, “Hell, yes.” For me, it’s high time for something different. Monsieur Louboutin seems to read my mind and delivers accordingly.

The new silhouette is sleeker, edgier, and with the kind of innovative design that propelled him beyond Manolos in the early 2000′s. And no worries for those who are after all-out decadence, there are plenty of heavy metal spikes and sparkling crystals for those who want them – think ethnic embroideries as royal as an Indian wedding and toe-caps with heavy-metal spikes so long you probably need a permit to wear them.

The only sequins I’m interested in for Spring 2012, however, come via a flash of delicate gold against my (hopefully) bronzed feet next spring, like on these barely-there metallic sandals. Material shake-ups, like futuristic silver set off by snake, suede, and stacked heels; bolder straps and angled-out heels (as seen on these chain-mail numbers), and a decidedly architectural new spin. Louboutin’s take on avant-garde is sure to become the new guard.
