Frugal snob alert! Summer dressing is more carefree and casual – you can get away with springing for cheaper, anti-commitment gear. There’s no need to pay $500 for espadrilles when Nine West is offering chic pairs for 10% of the price! Their “Braxton,” a pumped-up, strappy wedge platform, and “Jaxson,” a laid-back slingback from the Vintage America collection, styles are fun and colorful. Best of all, you won’t cry if they fall in the pool or fall apart on your feet (my very expensive espadrilles with a certain red sole actually unraveled while I was walking; the entire bottom inch of the sole fell off and I had to go the rest of the day, lopsided). At this price – the “Jaxson” is on sale for less than a round of poolside drinks! – so go ahead, splurge and get a few pairs in summer colors like pink, tangerine, plum, and shades of blue, totally guilt-free.

“Braxton” Wedge at Nine West for $99.

“Jaxson” Wedge at Nine West for $47.40 (from $79).

Alluring Alaïa shoes keep reeling us back in! After Tina’s disastrous Alaïa incident, I’m not sure I ever want to pay two grand for a pair of their shoes. There’s nothing on these wedges that can fall off (unlike Tina’s heavy-metal plaque), but then again, should raffia ever be priced at two thousand bucks?

They are beautiful, though: thick, braided raffia looks romantic and striking against a wickedly curvaceous wedge. A chunky buckle ankle-strap makes them wearable and even day-appropriate. The height is impressive and somehow not intimidating: the platform is 3″, so the pitch is a manageable 3.5″. That’s my cut-off for comfort; anything higher and the arches ache. These platforms are a dreamy vacation shoe, but remember you aren’t packing – or spending – light. These shoes alone will take you over the luggage weight limit, and maybe over your summer vacation budget! On Net-a-Porter for $2,045.

Pair with: Show off those gams in Kenny‘s “Seoul” shorts, woven lightweight tweed with metallic and ribbon accents in the colors of a tropical sunset. On ShopBop for $150.

Memorial Day isn’t the only reason to celebrate today! The coolest brand around is having a major 40%-off sale, which starts for the public on June 3rd. But the private sale, only open to VIP, which, of course, Snob readers definitely are, starts today.

Stock up on all chunky sandals, like punchy orange patent on raw wood and cork, and architectural yet totally wearable wedges. CoStume National manages to make medium-height heels super-sexy, and even their avant-garde flats are fantastic. I’m getting palpitations – no one is more excited about this than me! The shoe spree is on! I got the ankle strap flat sandals (does 1″ count as a heel?), they are soooo me!

To get your 40% discount,<a target=_"blank" href="http://www.costumenational.com/account/profile.asp"> log on to join their email list. Once you’ve done that you are ready to shop! Use code SNOBEXCLUSIVE at checkout and click “Apply”. This code is valid until June 3rd, that’s when everyone else gets in on the sale. Happy Memorial Day shopping!

This is whole lot of shoe with a whole lot of action going on, but somehow it all comes together. Find yourself getting dressed and your outfit’s looking ho-hum? Strap into this mega-shoe and you’ve instantly added the emphasis you need to look anything but boring. In a mélange of rich brown shades and dynamic textures, like whipstitching, elaphe snakeskin, studs, and suede. Embellished is an understatement, but Jimmy Choo’s sandals are surprisingly neutral and look great on. The proportions are so well-balanced, this six-inch stiletto is actually easy to walk in. Some might say these are too much, but I say it’s just right! A perfectly orchestrated hodgepodge of tribal-glam exoticism.
late (remember yesterday’s zebra costume-wearing Mary Jane?). So it’s refreshing to see a pair of sandals with no more adornment than a single, perfectly placed pom-pom. I bear a soft spot for the spunky little fluff balls, maybe because I was utterly obsessed with pom-pom socks as a little kid in the seventies and eighties. Or maybe it’s a throwback to a time when cheerleaders seemed kind of cool!

Rodarte for Opening Ceremony‘s suede rendition on a classic strappy sandal is a great way to add a bit of ornamental detail without going overboard. Both are buttery, but the moss green is particularly lovely; a great neutral to wear with your colorful summer wardrobe. A couple of pom-poms for punctuation and pale green for effortless impact.
Pair with: Add timeless allure to your playful platforms with Vivienne Westwood Anglomania‘s “Marghi” cotton dress – a classic cut, a wardrobe must. Suffice to say, JC de Castelbajac‘s pony-fur shoes border on comical. It takes a genuine oddball or a real attention-worshiper to wear these. How would you like to look down and have your shoes stare back at you? Awk-ward! I say, chop off the mane, pull off the ears (they even look like they might tickle a bit), razor off the eyes (am I the only one who finds them unsettling?), and you have a chic pair of zebra pony-hair d’orsay pumps. On Luisa Via Roma for $677.50.

Modern day pin-up and burlesque queen Dita Von Teese consistently puts a new spin – or shall I say enchantingly old? – on daily dressing. Her recent vintage-based look while out shopping at Fred Segal in LA this week (seriously, who has the guts and savvy to dress like this for a day of shopping?) is single-handedly enough to inspire some more glamorous summer shoe choices than your typical strappy sandal or espadrille wedge.

Anastasia Bice‘s pale turquoise-on-leopard print bow pumps ($513.60) are fit for the modern Vargas girl; Dita would wear them with a match aqua-blue wiggle dress, no doubt.

Nothing says “retro vixen” like red patent-leather peep-toes – Miu Miu‘s ($650) are embellished with a big bow and even bigger heel. The lady loves her pumps, but Giuseppe Zanotti‘s python-embossed leather platform T-straps ($595) are also out of another era. Feeling casual? Christian Louboutin‘s gingham peep-toe kitten heels are Dita’s version of a flat. And Charlotte Olympia makes shoes for nostalgic women who love their high-high heels; her sky-high “Dolores” heel ($1,002) with espadrille “island” platform and delicate ankle strap would be Dita’s vacation shoe.

So the next time you reach for your comfy flats, ask yourself, “What would Dita do?”

Camilla Skovgaard is a fairly new shoe designer who has already developed an unmistakable style: high-heels for the girl who dresses herself and owns the room, and with a penchant for treaded soles, she also isn’t afraid to break into a run. Or in this case, possibly take off in mid-air. While this patent leather sandal lack Skovgaard’s trademark sole, the straps don’t just end at the back but flair out and make the shoe look like it’s taking flight. It’s futuristic, though not in an un-wearable way – hey, the future is now! Somehow, this is also classic and versatile. Maybe the allure is in the mottled, cracked patent leather with a grungy texture for a super-cool look. I’m even finding myself wishing for the classic, crazy Skovgaard rubber sole. So it might be a little costume-y, but now would that be so bad?

Pair with: Zadig & Voltaire’s metallic snake-effect shoulder bag is a classic shape with a chained-out rocker edge – a flash-of-lightning-esque bag for your winged sandals. Zadig & Voltaire “Rock Snake Deluxe” Shoulder Bag, $490.

Chanel’s 2011 pre-fall collection was inspired by Byzantium and its queen, Empress Theodora. The result: the character of the sumptuous bohemian, with looks heavy on golden touches, brocade, and disheveled up-dos. And flats. To my dismay, flats are here to stay. At least Chanel proves they can be worn just as decadently as heels and with just as much flair. Byzantine-chic is at full-force in these black suede sandals, trimmed in captivating golden trim. So if you’re going to do a flat, do it Chanel-style, and pair these with a flowy Grecian goddess gown, and perhaps a bejeweled headband and ornately made-up eye. Make it count because while a flat sandal might say “laid-back,” the price is anything but. At Bergdorf Goodman for $1,495.

Affordable Alternatives: Somehow a high-heel makes a high price easier to digest. Marc Jacob’s suede and metallic snake-trimmed ballerina flats suggest a similar opulent exoticism (with a sense of humor). While Vionnet’s may not have the same spiraling pizzazz as Chanel’s, their sequined-embellished black suede flats are fit for the regal bohemian. A funky, punk option? Toga’s embellished green leather-and-black patent flats, with metal ornaments and a mesh cutout heel.

What in the world is this? I wish my eyes were deceiving me because what I see are five pairs of shoes crammed into one, none of which match each other. Beyond indecisive, Prada’s wedge is schizophrenic. As in certifiably, straitjacket-wearing crazy, and not even in a fun, exciting way! It’s a Neapolitan ice cream sandwich-style mash-up of rubber-soled hiking boot and romantic espadrille: what sense does that make? The granny-style lace-up canvas (with an out-of-place sexy cutout, no less) is just plain dowdy and unprepared for the extreme heel it’s perched upon. It’s like the upper and the heel don’t even know the other exists. This shoe needs to make a decision about the direction it wants to go in. Because for now that direction is nothing but confusing and ugly. At Bergdorf Goodman for $695.

With downpour after thunderstorm this spring, it feels more like the Year of the Rain than the Year of the Rabbit. I’m not complaining because parts of the country really needed it, but honestly, will it ever end? April showers are one thing, but they’re more clouds than May flowers. I’m heading to Taiwan next week, and it’s not much better there (it’s a subtropical island and rain showers are a daily occurrence). While I have cute knee-high rain boots, it’s blisteringly hot in Taiwan and who wants to sweat in rubber? A rain bootie in a motorcycle style is genius – and perfect for tropical thunderstorms! Marc by Marc Jacobs’ smart styling of a modest heel and chain-linked touch mean these are essentially real ankle boots with a rain-slick look. I might even have the urge to splash in a puddle or two. On Net-a-Porter for $150.

Pair with: A warm weather rain boot warrants a short-sleeved trench. Alexander Wang’s “Slinky” jacket has downtown appeal to suit these biker boots. At Barneys New York for $895.

These are hilarious. They look like a cross between a therapeutic boot and a wedge. I can’t put my finger on what exactly makes me feel this way, but I have a feeling it has something to do with the completely closed front and low pitch. I think I would feel like I was just carrying around nude blocks on my feet like some weird Biggest Loser challenge or something.

The Thimister Platform Wedge looks heavy and clunky. I don’t want either one of these words to describe what I’m wearing, and gives me a pretty good idea as to how I would feel wearing them. These seem like they would add an unpolished, frumpy aspect to even the sexiest of outfits. With the huge level bottom they also look like the sneakers that are supposed to help shape your back end. If these accomplish that, I’ll allow it. If not, I’ll pass. I have enough baggage in my life; I’d rather not strap more on myself on purpose.

The average flatform has a tendency to be a little too flat, a little too platformed, and way too unflattering, but I love these non-heel heels! You get all of the height with none of the pitch. When a big chunk of wood is this beautiful, you want as much wedge as you can handle. Cacharel‘s open-toe platform sandal, complemented by nude straps, keeps it on the organic side, for appeal that’s both earthy and cool. The straps are suede so they have great give, which is so important for such a substantial wedge. A thoughtful rubber sole keeps you even-keeled, and the placement of the thick strap across the toes secures them comfortably. High and mighty is the way to go! At Barneys New York for $635.

Pair with: This shoe is super-fab with the current look of wide-legged pants. Robert Rodriguez’s pleated hot coral trousers will pump up your soft neutral.

The ladies Down Under proved they roll in high style – and often enviably high heels – when they came out for Fashion Week in Sydney the first week of May. Of course, Tommy Ton and Phil Oh were there capturing some of the best looks on the street. Here’s our new weekly roundup of the best shoe street style, proving that footwear is a great ensemble’s punctuation and foundation.

Which Balenciaga look strikes your fancy: wickedly sharp buckled stilettos, taking the pointy toe to a new level of masochism, fit for a dominatrix (or more likely an editrix)? Or mellow shades of pool and royal blue suede gladiator sandals, paired wittily with blue jeans and nude toenails?

Anna Harrison of Australian label My Pet Square looks like a pretty girl who can hang with the boys in 3.1 Phillip Lim booties. It’s all in the masculine/feminine styling: primary color-blocking via a blue tank and classic red Chanel shoulder bag, cuffed boyfriend jeans, and an oversized blazer, courtesy of her line.

No current street style roundup would be complete without a little Isabel Marant. Her brand of laid-back French cool is reach across continents, like on stylist Natalie Mark. Vintage peep-toe sandals dress up a girlie skirt and casual jean jacket, which would look too babyish without them.

In case you hadn’t heard, it’s the summer of color (even though it’s winter in Australia!). Not only is this chick unafraid of serious color-blocking, she’s boldly mashing up prints. The cropped white tee pulls her royal blue suede pumps, coral trousers, and plaid-over-cheetah layers together. It’s so wrong, it’s right. A snob-worthy bag, cool-nerd glasses, and the confidence to pull it all off doesn’t hurt, either.

Style-blogger Nicole Warne pulls Breton stripe double duty. Do you prefer her in black pumps and bright coral or burnt-orange booties, contrasted with a mullet-maxi goldenrod skirt and nautical jacket?

Sometimes, less is more. When you are scrambling home from work at 5:30pm on a Friday and are trying to make a 6pm dinner date, you don’t have time put a complicated outfit together while trying to re-straighten your hair, reapply eye-liner and try to throw what you can into a smaller purse because bringing a back-pack sized piece of luggage to a date is a little problematic. You want simple and easy. You want a go-to pair of pumps that are sexy and pretty that you can throw on with almost anything in your closet (minus that poncho you bought when everyone was wearing ponchos but this one looks more like a snuggie and isn’t nearly as warm that your dog now sleeps on).

The Pour La Victoire Irina Hidden Platform Pumps are perfect for this occasion. The patent-leather platform pumps have a seam detail on the toe and a 5″ heel to make you feel sexy without making you feel like you’re over-done. They come in the prettiest pastel colors that are perfect for spring including aqua, lilac, camel and nude.
The best way to set-off a super-short mini? Lace-up booties! They totally tone you down – nothing worse than strappy stilettos paired with itty-bitty skirts – while still sexing you up. That’s because they are: two parts Great Depression-era babe (yes, I am glamorizing the Great Depression!), one part 19th-century romance (black leather booties peeking out dangerously from tumbling petticoats) and just a dash teenage rebel (something about the lace-up connotes the scrappy, smoking-in-the-bathroom runaway).

Fresh and nautical, I’d love to wear these Paloma Barceló wedges for a day out on a sailboat. Or better yet, a fully-stocked yacht. There’s a lot happening on these perfectly summery platforms, but the overall feel is smooth and simplistic. Just a trip of rope in between two panels of leather, instead of an all-rope wedge, make them seasonal but not so espadrille-specific. Intricate, contrasting straps give the shoe a polished, grown-up look. Over a thin sling-back, they sex it up: no easy feat for a navy and brown espadrille wedge. To top it off, you won’t feel like your feet are going anywhere if you end up pounding the pavement. But maybe best of all? You’ve got to love the price: Frugal Snob approves!
