Balenciaga Cutout Boot: The Maarten Moment

Part punk creeper and part early-nineties combat boot, with a dash of futuristic robot thrown in, this shoe feels oddly familiar yet jarringly new. There was a period in my life (for about a week) when I had a strange obsession with Dr. Maarten boots and other butch footwear. Apparently fashion is having a similar moment. Balenciaga‘s “Cutout” boot has been all over the spring fashion issues (Elle is a major fan) and blogs (Rumi Neely is obsessed) because it is so typically unfashionable – totally practical, low heel, thick sole – that it is insanely fashionable. The chunky wraparound buckles and striking cutouts make it. What would ruin this apron-toe boot? Camouflage pants. The boyish shoe might be en vogue, but G.I. Jane is not. To carry off this look, wear an ultra-feminine dress or skirt and show off your multi-faceted personality. At Barneys New York for $1,275.

Pair with: Channel grunge-era Courtney Love (no smeared red lips, chipped nails, or sloppy behavior, though!) with a floral baby doll dress, like Paul & Joe Sister‘s “Oree” cotton mini. It will sweeten up your badass kicks. On Net-a-Porter for $365.
